As we look ahead to May Day (this Friday, May 1st), Indivisible is joining a nationwide call for a tactical escalation through an “Economic Blackout.” While the national “May Day Strong” movement promotes a general strike—no work and no school—we recognize the unique circumstances of our local community in Lassen County.
Given that many of us are retired and that our working members are often in critical public services like schools and healthcare where striking isn’t an option, we are focusing our local efforts on a powerful, realistic alternative: a consumer boycott.
This May Day, we invite you to participate in a 24-hour “no buy” day. The goal is to disrupt the status quo by refusing to spend money, particularly with big online retailers like Amazon, as well as major corporations like Walmart, and Starbucks. By choosing not to click “buy” for just one day, we join millions of others in sending a clear message that our economic power will not be used to support an authoritarian agenda.
Why this matters:
* Consumer activism is a proven way to exert pressure where it hurts—the bottom line.
* It demonstrates our collective resolve to protect our democratic institutions and support workers’ rights nationwide.
We aren’t just “not shopping”; we are “buying” into a better future for our community and our country. Let’s show that Lassen County can make a significant impact through intentional, peaceful economic defiance.
In Solidarity,
Lassen Indivisible
